Hey guys, I am building a campaign where an evil society is devouring the surrounding cultures in order to call upon the Sea god Yeathan (Originally found him in 3.5 Book of Vile Darkness, Pg. 12 ) to empower them pretty much as the ultimate naval force in my world through sacrifices and rituals.... The description I have found for him is short. I am homebrewing this campaign, and referencing Umberlee and Bilibdoolpoolp (Forgotten Realms Lore) as cousins in far off lands. I did not centralize on them because neither of them really struck me as the "Ultimate Organized Military" Types.. IDK, if you think they'd work better, please let me know. The point of the heroes would be to take down the Navy, either in it's infancy, or from the inside (depending on how strong the naval force can build up as the campaign goes on).
I am hoping that maybe someone in here may have an idea of where to look for maybe more info on Yeathan, or pretty much any evil sea god that would help mobilize an ultimate world power.... I'd like to put some more meat the bones of my stories..
Also, any great ideas to help power up the fear of an evil navy is also appreciated. Thanks in advance!
I appreciate the help, but Googling it doesn't quite hit the mark.
I would greatly appreciate another DM's opinion of the story line I'm looking to run, and if the god I have picked will fit, or if they think there is a better option.
On the other hand, google does offer a lot of information that has helped me. Thank you.
This is a little out of the box, but what if the evil god of the underworld decided he was going to make a bid for the sea domain, so in Greek (Roman?) mythology that would be Hades attempting to overthrow Poseidon. You could tap into any reasonably powerful evil god using this logic. If things went terribly wrong, another god (Zeus - Lawful Good) could step in to smite the evil god and restore the rightful order (Lawful) of things. I am not very deep into which gods of the waters/seas are evil. Seems most of them would be good. The Kraken (a mythical underwater beast) could be attempting to establish dominance over some portion of the seas with the help of an (chaotic) evil god.
Is it a total homebrew, or are you trying to stick to current Forgotten Realms lore? I ask because I would recommend reading up on the Second Sundering and the Era of Upheaval just before it. Those two events explain why a lot of deities from 3rd and 4th editions aren't represented in 5th. It also gives some insight into the power shift of the gods, and seems to almost fall in line with what you are looking to do. Without going too deep into those events, a lot of deities lost powers and were/are finding ways to regain them. There's a lot of info out there, but the forgotten realms wiki does a good job of chronologically summarizing.
As to the sea deities themselves, Yeathan can be a former deity trying to reclaim powers after the upheaval, or former deity turned patron. (Your evil army could thus have cleric based baddies or warlock based baddies.)
Umberlee, having recently regained her powers after the upheaval, could want to keep others out of the picture, not looking to share the sea. She's evil, but that doesn't mean she wouldn't try to recruit good players to get what she wants.
Deep Sashelas is also a former deity prior to the upheaval. Would be a good counter to Yeathan. Even Nanna-Sin, former deity turned immortal dragon turtle, could be an opposing force to Yeathan.
As to your main question about info on Yeathan, you've probably already found most of what there is to find. The upheaval and sundering scrambled the forgotten realms pantheon. It's currently being re-established in 5e modules and compendiums. The good thing is that you have a lot of leeway to use deities as you wish to fit your campaign.
This might be too left field and too much work, but what about Bel, Lord of Avernus, the first level of the Nine Hells, but most importantly, the location of the River Styx, the bridge between the Abyss and the Nine Hells. The plot would be that He wants to expand the River Styx onto the mortal plane, and in doing so, his influence. He is essentially the general of Hell, leading the fight against the Abyss. It could get pretty crazy.
I'll let you know if I find anything on Yeathan, but it doesn't look good...
If you can do it, it may be worth tracking down a copy of Stormwrack. It's from 3.5 and it's basically all about ocean stuff. Seas on different planes like the River Styx, Abysm, Thalasia etc and a bit of an over view of water Dieties. Again, not much detail, but it would be a handy sourcebook if you're building something epic all on the high seas.
