As the title suggests, my friend had given me an interesting idea that sounds overwhelmingly challenging, while also fun. Say if 5 Elder Brains had come into one colony, how would the hive mind system work if there is no single leader? Or if one of the Elder Brains had titled itself the leader, how would the rest of the colony react? Another idea crossed my mind being the actual possibility of the psionic energy being too much for the Elder Brains to handle.
Just something I thought sounds intriguing to think about.
If you look at Mind Flayer lore it pretty much suggests that they are time displaced from a future where they rule pretty much everything. The scenario you suggest would be probably the first steps towards that future coming true.

That brings up the idea of the Elder Brains being able to "assimilate" each other to become one huge Queen Brain
