So, I have a question for some DM's out there. One of my players came to me after the most recent session and asked me if she could work towards betraying her companions and going to join the "Dark" side per say. What is the best way to go about letting her have this, while still keeping a hold on the plans that I have in place already? What is the best way to go about this?
Okay, so my first thought is "Why?" Is the player mature enough to portray an evil character with out being a wang rod to the people at the table. In my estimation, based on decades of experience, most players are not ready to accept the challenge and are instead just incapable of enhancing the group's fun through their portrayal. The culmination of Critical Role Season 1 saw a well executed and marvelous betrayal. The Player and the DM were fully in synch and the event was the icing on the cake for a wonderful story. Think hard and discuss the challenges of this dramatic change with your player.
There is one more thing to consider before saying yes though. What were the rules, spoken and unspoken, about PvP activities prior to this request. If the group formed under the auspices that the Player Character's would be working together towards their goals and that they should encourage each other and even meta out some of the outstanding differences for the good of the whole (like High Elves joining with Drow in the party), then the request should be politely nixed.
