So one of my PC's (Goliath Barbarian) right at the end of our last session decided to go and drink a random potion in a Druids Cottage. He has no idea what it is, and worst of all, neither do I.
He drank it, I made him roll a D20, he rolled, and I said "And that's the end of tonights session". So now I have a few days to work out what the hell he drank. Idea's would be most welcome. What potions would you think would be found in a Druids Cottage, located in a willow grove on the edge of a small frontier town?
Definitely some potions of healing, potion of animal friendship, maybe a potion of poison just to troll the barb, maybe potion of invisibility, potion of water breathing, anything kind of nature related really.
You could Homebrew a Potion of Polymorph that transforms him into a beast, you could go the route of just turning him into Squirrel to troll the player, or you could you into a Cave Bear that way he would still be able to fight. Although if you wanted to go the route where he would still be able to fight, it would probably be a good idea to use the rules for Wild Shape instead of Polymorph, since he will be still be able to use hid class features like rage with Wild Shape. Also you could extend the duration so that he's stuck being a forest animal for a day or even longer if you feel like it.
I would definitely encourage you to have fun with this and to not even worry about straying away from rare or very rare potions, as you're not giving them one that they can plan to use in a pinch to help them in a situation; they've already drank it, so the benefits will most likely be for flavor purposes unless you see them coming up on a heavy roleplay/battle situation in the next in game hour. I'd think like Potion of Gaseous Form, or Potion of Mind Reading. If you want to really have some fun, maybe even a Potion of Longevity, so that player may age or get younger. Homebrewing potions is always an option too. Maybe you want to have the potion give the player double the fingers and toes for the next few hours, or maybe they sprout bat wings, or maybe they lose their nose for a period of time.
I think it may also depend on what type of druid that was. If they were an evil druid, it would make sense for a ton of the potions to be poisonous and have negative effects. If the druid was an experimenter, maybe they have some of those homebrew options. If the druid was just a straight up kind healer dude, maybe all it was was a potion of healing. The world is your oyster
