Hello, right now I am trying to write the start of a campaign. My current idea is that when the party is in a village a dome of force appears over the town, things can go in but not out. But I don’t know where I should go from there, any ideas?
So they can't leave their "starting area?" If your heroes are helpless, there's no better time to introduce your villain. Who's the villain? What do they want? Is this THEIR dome of force? What could they hope to find in this simple village?
What happens when people bump into the barrier? To they take damage? Is it just like hitting a wall? Was the barrier made intentionally? By who? As a curse or a weird safety measure? Was it made to quarantine an infected region/people? Is whoever made it in the dome? Can they walk in and out? How did they do it?
I recommend a mad wizard and an experiment gone wrong, or perhaps a curse from a neighboring lord/lady/spell-caster because of a personal grudge with someone in the city. My favorite idea I've come up with is that someone activated a defense mechanism from an ancient city buried beneath the village. You could have a whole underground/underdark wrecked city that fell for whatever reason. They journey through the ruins and caverns of the old city and dismantle other old security methods, traps and such. What set off the alarm? Some mysterious creature lurking just below the streets of your average town?
If you want to make it really interesting, this village could be the town one or more of your players are from. That way, they aren't just saving random people, the ones they love are at stake.
