I do know there are Calendars out there already but my world is very customized but still in that general fantasy life. I'm working on a better Calendar that I can show my players so they have a sense of the time and what the world is like.
Long story short, I'm looking for anyone that wants to throw ideas in of what each month should be named. Generally 12 months in a year, as well as each day of the week possibly. Thanks in advance!
Try to find a common theme to tie your calendar together, like naming it after the gods, or celestial events. Like during summer, naming the "july" month something like "Longday" makes sense if in the northern hemisphere (assuming a earth-like orbit and axial-spin) since the days are longer.
Another good tip I found when reading up on designing a calendar is to design a perfect system, like 30 days a month for 12 months, but then add in some deviances. Maybe take a page from our history and have a ruler so obsessed with themselves they add in another month or week named after themselves, and all of a sudden your year no longer has 360 days, but 367 days, and the problems that arise from that.
I'd recommend looking into how out calendars got that way :)
Months can be named after Rulers - July, and August are named for Julius and Augustus Caesar respectively.
Names of Gods creep into naming schemes - Thor's Day, and Wotan's Day might sound familiar in you say them quickly ;)
Months can be boringly named after the month they were originally in the year - October was an 8th month, once upon a time. The calendar has changed since then.
Also - not all Calendars have to be complete. Ancient Roman Calendars used to have detailed days and months for the Spring, Summer, and Harvest periods. Then the Calendar stopped, and it was all like "the 92nd day of Winter", but the Calendar would pick up again next Spring. Makes sense if you think of the Calendar as being a tool for farming management; there's no Farming in the Winter.
And to be realistic, you can mash all these naming conventions together - just like we do :)
