so im kinda a new dm but at most i can only get about 3 players so how could i create a npc for theese new players and it help them out im planning to ruin the basic basic campaign so any advice would be helpful note : game is lost mine of phanderlver
One option is to have a player (or more) run multiple characters. You could have an NPC that is just a character you made. Or you can run an adventure with 3 PCs (3 isn't even that bad).
While it's not official, you might check out this Unearthed Arcana, about specifically creatingSidekick NPCs.
While the rules have only been released under Unearthed Arcana for now, it's been officially announced that an updated & streamlined version of the rules are coming out as part of the new D&D Essentials kit being released this fall, so you can probably use these rules safely: see theD&D Decent:2019 opening ceremony video, around the 1 hour 3 minute mark.

Read the section in the PHB where it handles NPC companions. You can have an NPC join the party for a short while if they have a mutual short term goal.
Playing two characters can be tricky if your PCs are new players!
