I'm new to the world of Dungeons and Dragons as a player and as a Dungeon Master. My boyfriend has asked me to run the Lost Mines of Phandelver Starter Set to see if I am comfortable with being a DM in future campaigns or if i just want to stay as a player for now. The group that I am running my campaign with are all decently experienced players and DMs, excluding my friend, who is new to the world of D&D as well, and my other friend and my boyfriends brother, who has only played and never run a campaign. I feel like i'm more nervous that i am going to mess something up more than anything. Do you guys have any suggestions on how to run the campaign or any tips for a new DM?
Well first things first, accept that you are going to make mistakes. Everyone does as a DM and especially their first campaign. Relax and have fun. The good news is your boyfriend is an experienced player and so is the majority of your group, they should be pretty forgiving and understanding. Obviously read the adventure, if there are parts that are confusing then ask your BF or someone else in the group before you start. Do your best to roll with the punches, every group is different but more than likely a player will try to do something unexpected. Also there is a wealth of great resources on Youtube, just type in "DM tips" that can give you all sorts of great stuff.
Pureluck said it all. I'm new to DND. Never played it cause I never had found people to let me play. So I dug in and learned to GM. I make mistakes. I screw things up. I've Gm'd one session so far.
I was blessed in my first group with people I didn't know with a story I had written and they have taken everything to places in had not prepared for. That's the fun part. Regardless of any mistakes. Doesn't matter if things seam to get screwed up. It's all about fun.
Feel free always to make things up. Nothing really has to make any sense. As long as people are having fun. That's all that matters really.
Your boyfriend asked you to run the lost mines. Being a player is one aspect of DND. Being a GM is so much more. He must believe in you enough to be able to do it in a fun way.
Advice is simple. Get the books for the lost mine. Read it. Then read it again. And again. Get the story in your head before you run the experience. Add more to the story.
Problem with pre made stories like the lost mines is that it's on rails. Players almost never stay in the rails unless the story is good. So have fun with the story. Add silly things if you like. You don't have to go by the story. You can all start off in the story by the book but you can add that some kind of event happens. Like a carnival or an attack on the village.
You being the GM.. the world is yours to create and have fun with. Enjoy it. Don't feel bad that your not playing the game because you are. You are every npc and every encounter. You're every trap and every room to the littlest if details like a pair of glasses on a table that is needed to be worn to read a book to the way the flowers change in a field when players walk through them.
Besides. If you don't like being a GM you can say no in the future. No one can force it. Give it a try. Wish you the best.
Simply roll with the punches and learn to use each of these lines depending on the context and the type of game you want to run "yes and", "no but", and "yes but". Also, beware that all players have some murder hobo tendencies which is a good thing it keeps us DM's on our toes. And DON'T BE A RULES LAWYER DM

I recommend NOT flipping off the dragon.
