My players have to attend a charity gala to help raise money in a city they are in. The first half of the gala the party will have to hob-nob with the elite and try to get more donations.
I am stuck on what to do for the second part of the party. The easy solution is to have the party ambushed by a monster or one of the cults that they have been hunting, but I just feel that is sooo...idk, expected?!
I'm hoping for some creative input for the community on what else could be done besides an ambush!
Is there a way you could have a competing group also trying to raise donations, or talk people out of donating to the party? Maybe a full blown debate or social conflict starts up where the party has to defend their cause. An npc claims the party is just going to run off with the money or isnt going to use it to its full capacity. "Give the money to me and Ill make sure the job gets done right." Sort of deal.
I think it could be interesting if someone accused them of raising the money for themselves instead of for charity. This could create an interesting social encounter where the rest of the people at the gala turn on the party and demand answers. Just make sure you give the accuser some sort of believable accusation to make it feel realistic. Good luck!
Someone could steal all the donation money, launching into a whodunit type mystery. With the time pressure being the charity that really needs the money by x time or else they’ll get shut down/someone dies etc.

Have you considered the published adventure Winter's Splendor? It takes place at a gala-like get-together at the Cassalanter Villa.
