So, my friend and I just came into being Co-DM's for a Princes of the Apocalypse module we've been players in because our original DM threw a fit and abandoned us. But, she and another player had so many things planned for a character's arc. Essentially, this character who has been possessed by a Chaos Demon for quite some time, is going to be a Boss Battle of sorts. We've finally come to the near-end of her character arc, but what my Co-DM doesn't know is that there are plans already set in motion to have her become a 'prophet' of sorts after they kill Vanifer.
She's going to be the new one to try and Summon the Fire prince (she has come into possession of Tinderstrike), but my Co-DM came up with this idea to make a 'sacris arum' that can destroy the demon within the vessel that is this character. It's a long, elaborate story, and we were given instructions by a paladin's spirit guide, telling us we needed certain components to create this sacred bow. But the thing is, is that this demon is already controlling the character (and has been for quite some time) and knows everything that's going to happen.
So my question, exactly, is do you all think, that if this demon-controlled-character tried to switch out one of these items (we'll say a green dragon's teeth for the needed black dragon's teeth), and a ritual was started while they were forging the bow, do you think the ritual would not work and the bow would still be complete (giving the appearance that it worked), or would the ritual be a total flop and nothing happens? I've got mixed reviews and opinions from a handful of my other DM friends, but no real answer so I'm at an impasse.
I'd tell the co DM exactly what's going on. Then work together to find a solution that your both come up with. That's also where a possible is with character knowledge and player knowledge comes onto play. But any good DM or player would be able to keep that information separate.
To be honest, you're the DM! There's no set rules for magic and there's no right answer. Think of the game as a TV show: which outcome would make the better episode for you and your players to watch?
That said, I personally like the idea of the bow appearing to work but actually being flawed. Just make sure you don't accidentally kill all your characters when it fails!
Oh, and tell your co-DM. :-) Have fun!

Any ideas?
