So one of the big twists in my campaign right now is that some people the players are on friendly terms with had Modify Memory cast on them over time and don't fully know what the truth is. One player now has the ability through Potions to make someone tell the truth and read their mind. How would that work if they use it on them? Would they get Two Memories, a jumbled mess? or the modified memory?
In general, magic that compels people to tell the truth will only force them to tell you what they believe the truth to be. It won't cause them to know the truth if it is different from what they believe. Similarly, mind reading magic will only let you know the false memories, it won't reveal anything the target doesn't know.
