Hello all. My friends and I talked for years about playing dnd. None of us had and no one wanted to sign up to DM. I finally bit the bullet and now we have a group of 7 ages from 32-72 playing the starter campaign.
They are about to finish with level 4 characters.
Our next campaign will be the special edition of the Baldurs gate campaign and our first full big story.
My question. Should I force them to make new characters? I feel like I may get some gruff as some of them are very attached. Should I leave it to them as a group to decide if they will do new characters? If they don’t want to is that so bad? They would be starting the campaign higher level which makes me a little concerned about difficulty balancing. We also have many other campaigns lined up (I have books for waterdeep and strahd) so I don’t want them starting those at level 20 lol.
There was just a series of articles on this site with introductory adventures called "The Road to Baldur's Gate." It included advice on how to get into Descent with 4th-level characters, either by skipping the Baldur's Gate content and heading straight for Avernus, or by upping the difficulty of the encounters and reducing the XP given through the opening sections to adjust.

What are your thoughts.
Thanks.
