Using the Amber Temple map from Curse of Strahd, I'm planning on making a new dungeon. The temple was built to contain a powerful lich who once terrorized the land. In order for him to be contained effectively, his essence was split and stored in the amber sarcophagi, and the players can destroy them to slowly build the Lich's strength (without his memory and essence, he's quite affable, and will offer some incentive).
However, I'm at a loss as to how to convey the lich's slow build in strength as the party shatter sarcophagi. The three large sarcophagi (Zhudun, Tenebrous and the Vampyr in CoS) are the most important, containing his name, memory and phylactery.
You could portray him as being in shambles with tattered robes at first, but as he regains his strength the cracks in his bones start to mend, his robes knit themselves, and a deep red glow starts to emanate from the previously empty eye sockets.
I would have the robes knit themselves together, maybe have the litch return to a sitting position despite being 'deactivated' and last have whatever casting focus they are known for become healed and beginning to glow with renewed power as they wake up.
