Hiya guys, relatively new DM here in a bit of a pickle. I'm gearing up to run some players through a one shot, in it I'm using home brew statistics for some spriggans that I've found - fey creatures entirely made of plants/sticks - problem is one of my players is a necromancy wizard who really loves to create undead and the like.
I'm trying to figure out whether or not he would be able to use his necromancy to turn the spriggans into zombies, I've ruled out the spells like animate dead that specify humanoid targets, but there's the spells like Danse Macabre that only say small or medium corpses. Will he be able to target the spriggans with that or would it not work as their not flesh and blood?
I think the spell itself might be a bit worded vaguely to suit DM fiat, as always the behavior of monsters and creatures are absolutely in your favor of saying yes or no to the fact that the Fey creatures are 'corpses' or how they interact in your world. Fey are generally weird and mysterious creatures perhaps the spriggans' bodies fade or disappear when slain; I don't know but as the DM you should.
Now secondly, the spell says they either are made Zombies or Skeletons which are a specific CR regardless of the CR of the original monster. So if your necromancer does resurrect these creatures they only have the limited stats of a Zombie or Skeleton which are much more manageable. Sure the party now has meat shields now to interpose between themselves and other encounters but DnD is about ingenuity and working with your skills as a DM if they do this then encounters and challenges become more difficult or they earn less experience.
Hope this give you some insight, I see you posted this at the beginning of October but I think it's still advice worth sharing.
