I'm getting ready to throw a few creatures that have various immunities against my players, I'm curious how to use damage and such in combat. If they have damage immunity against certain types of damage, would I have the creature take no damage on those types of attacks or half damage? (The party is currently all at level 12)
Immunity means the creature takes no damage from that type. Resistance means the creature takes half damage from that type. This is true regardless of level
make sure you don’t spoil their first try with a damage type the creature is immune to (in other words, let them proceed with the attack...and then say it did nothing): that’s part of play to figure out how best to attack an opponent
It might be good to give them a vague hint about what the danger might be immune to. IE the __________'s scales look tougher then iron as they glint in the sunlight.
But I do agree that you shouldn't just outright TELL them. Plus somethings should be logical like a fire demon is obv immune to fire.
Definitely...I was more referring to this kind of exchange...
PC: I attack the imp with fire bolt
DM: that won’t work, it’s immune
PC: oh, then I use chill touch instead
...
Just to be clear, I'm pretty sure this was meant as an example of what NOT to do. Rather, you should say, "The Fire Bolt impacts the little devil, but it doesn't even cause it to flinch. It laughs meanly and winks at you."

Canto alla vita alla sua bellezza ad ogni sua ferita ogni sua carezza!
I sing to life and to its tragic beauty To pain and to strife, but all that dances through me The rise and the fall, I've lived through it all!

THANKS! this was my original understanding, i just wanted to check since it is the first time i have have used creatures of this type.

My example was very much a “DON’T do this”
