Currently running a "Dying Earth" Steam Punk/Madmax flavored campaign. There are a few cataclysmic events that have happened on the earth at the time of the campaign. But I'm having a hard time coming up with a suitable nemesis villain for a possible plotline (This campaign is kinda Sandboxie) In the main continent of my world there is a huge petrified forest that is constantly covered in acrid rainfall. The only creatures that are known to live there are immune to acid, Or are underground. Several Thousands of years ago, a nation of a highly advanced Artificers who where the prime Rivals to a Roman Empire analog existed in this forested land. There was a war that lasted a hundred years or so. The Empire was victorious eventually through one of the artificers betraying his fellows. The King of the Artificers in a fit of madness destroyed his nation by covering it in acid rain. Now Thousands of years later, the spirit of the vengeful king has awoken. And he is resurrecting an army of undead robot warriors (Think Necrons from 40k). My players are not gonna get to this lost nation for a hot second. But I'm fairly certain of their eventual travels there. But I need a villain... And I'm drawing a blank.
Undead cyborg esq. Desires to destroy the natural world in order to rebuild it??? Idk. Any ideas are much appreciated.
So you need an early game villain, with loose ties to the BBEG? OK. Black Earth Priest stat block from PotA. Only reskin it so it’s all cyborg or artifice magic. He leads a large endeavor to destroy the Petrified Forest, grinding up the trees, making them into road beds. But this displaces the monsters in the forest, which now attack more openly in populated areas. He doesn’t care. He sees these trees as an exploitable resource, and has a PR campaign to convince people this will open the door to a new, safe highway system through previously dangerous ways, and with the forest gone, the land can be cleansed and replanted. Whether it can, or not he doesn’t care. He’s harvesting the acid pools underground just as eagerly, concentrating it, and selling it in the form of various weapons on the black market.
