I have a player whose Paladin has just hit level 5 and he’s wondering about the spell Find Steed. He’s wondering is the steed appears with any riding equipment (saddle etc) or if he has to purchase those items. He’s also wondering if any equipment he has placed on the steed disappear when it does or does the equipment just fall to the ground. He’s concerned about having to carry barding, saddle, etc if the steed drops to 0hp and disappears. I have some thoughts on it but would like opinions please.
I’d never considered saddles and such, so I suppose I was always kind of hand-waving it. I’d not worry about that. It isn’t really a horse (or whatever) after all, so you could say he doesn’t need it, or it shows up with everything already on. I’ve never really bothered with barding since it’s so speedy, and you can always re-summon the horse, and AoE spells where barding doesn’t help are usually the bigger problem with mounts. As for items, I’d go with they all fall to the ground if the mount goes away for whatever reason. How he carries it all after is a different problem.
Crawford has said its up to the DM. I'd let the spirit come and go with whatever gear makes something a "steed" rather than a "horse." If you put horseshoes of a zephyr on your horse, I'd say it took them when it left and brought them back when it returned. The only thing I wouldn't want is some smart aleck summoning a steed and then selling the tack for money.

That’s pretty much what I was considering. Thanks for the input.
