When a character learns a spell from a book or scroll, how do you reflect that knowledge with their spell list in DnD Beyond? Because a class like wizard already theoretically knows every spell on their list, they just need to prepare them so just knowing a spell isn’t really enough of a reward for spending the time and money, I don’t think. Is there a way to override the amount of spells learned or prepared to reflect knowledge? Or is it something that would need to be manual?
Wizards learn 2 spells every level, except at level 1 where they get 6 at the start. From those spells they know, they prepare wizard level + INT mod number of spells.
With learning another spell from another spellbook or a scroll, it would just be another from the list they CAN prepare from.
You’re clearly misunderstanding something. Wizards do not now every spell on their list the way clerics and druids do. The only spells they know are the ones they start with, the two they learn per level, and what they copy from scrolls and other spellbooks. And if their spellbook is ever lost, they don’t know any except what they currently have prepared.
A wizard doesn't start with all spells known. Go into the charcter sheet in D&D Beyond choose 'Spells' and click 'Manage Spells'. From there is a drop down to add spells to your spell book. You 'Learn' them to add them to the spellbook, and 'Prepare' them to have them ready to cast.
Ahh okay. I’ve never gone into the spells from a wizard character sheet and I must have misunderstood what the PH was saying. I never play wizards and I’ve never DMd for one so that must have been where the confusion came in. Thanks!
