I recently talked about my BBEG in a previous post, and how I had decided to turn him into an ancient Lich King. In my last post, I discussed how this BBEG was trapped on another plane of existence by a band of heroes who sacrificed themselves to lock him away and ensure that he could not return.
I have decided on a name for him. I am going to call him Samael VonHomburg, and I am going to give him several titles as well.
The Scourge of Corrant
The Sorrow of Mirrindith
The Serpent of Golmuth
Lord of Nikerymath.
He will also be known as:
Samael The Torturer
Samael The Wicked
Samael The Unholy, and
Samael The Fallen One
Although specific knowledge of Samael Von Homburg has mostly passed out of existence at this point, there is still a collective knowledge of his life remaining in the famous phrases, spoken by commoners and nobles alike. Some of these phrases are:
By Samael's tears
By Samael's chaos
Let me give you, Samael's kiss
By Samael's rage
The problem is, I am not sure how to use these phrases. I have a sort of understanding of each saying worked out, but I am not sure about them.
By Samael's tears
I am thinking that this is a way of expressing an all-consuming, though unrequited love. A love so fierce that you would do anything, even go to war to win the affections of the one you love.
By Samael's chaos
Something that people say when things go wrong or bad things happen. They are essentially blaming Samael for everything that goes wrong in their lives when they say this.
Samael's kiss
I had this line in mind when I came up with this one. "If what the Devil offered them held as much dark allure as it did for The Fallen One, then only the purest of men could refuse."
Samael's rage
Similar to Samael's tears, only in this instance, an all-consuming unstoppable passion that results in Samael's chaos. In other words, saying something like "by Samael's rage, he tore through them like a knife through butter," would be saying "yes, what he did was bad, or caused bad things to happen, but passion had made him blind to the reality of his actions, so it is not his fault."
I am not sure if any of the above fit together correctly though, and I am struggling to come up with any more sayings, or ways to integrate them into everyday speech.
What do you think about what I have come up with so far, and do you have any suggestions for improvements or any other sayings that I might use?
This is a really neat thread, and I hope it sticks in the minds of your players. I don't have specific other phrases, but it could be fun to play around with the ways that different people in society invoke this dreaded memory. The average merchant might say "by Samael's Chaos" when his ink is knocked over, but maybe an irreverent salt-of-the-earth type would say "Samael's fart" when his ox cart throws a wheel. Maybe a mother or priest hears a child invoke this name and chastises them, thinking that even saying his name is bad luck.
Cool idea for the campaign, report back on how the players receive it!

Hi guys,
