Hey guys! It's my first time to post on this forum.
I'm trying to write a campaign that involves travelling throughout the Sword Coast. The campaign ideally starts at Baldur's Gate, and the first major mission involves travelling to Waterdeep and not taking the "main road", and having travel via sea not a viable option as part of the story.
What I want to know is, what are my options here? I want to give the party different choices.
Should I get them to take the Chionthar to the Trade Way?
Is there a bridge in the Trollclaws? What can I eve find in the Trollclaws?
How do I get from the Gate to Boarskyr Bridge?
What can I find in the Fields of the Dead? (I googled and read that it's now some sort of farmland where the farmers would often dig up a skeleton or something)
The encounter of the week series here did a perfect series for this in prep for the release of Descent Into Avernus. It was a series of maybe a dozen encounters along the trade way between Waterdeep and Baldur’s. I’ve been running it with my kids as its own adventure. Probably going to run another leg today. There’s great maps of the coast for reference to where you’re at on the trip. All the questions you asked are answered in this series.
It starts with the May 20 encounter and goes from there.
if you’re intent on trekking the opposite way, you’ll need to adjust the difficulty of encounters on either end of the journey. And if you’re playing with people with a longer attention span who want multiple encounters per session, you’ll need to pad the series quite a bit, but it’s perfect for my 9 and 11 year olds as written.
I had a group that really enjoyed going through those as an intro for Decent, unfortunately 2 of the players moved away shortly after we actually got into the book.
I used several of the prep adventures for Decent to Avernus in the Hoard of the Dragon Queen while the players went from Baldur's Gate to Waterdeep with the caravan. There is some good background info in Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Adventurers Guide to the Sword Coast, all of the Decent to Avernus prep adventures. If the players are going overland than just about anything is fair game. Hobgoblin raiders in the TrollClaws who want to hit caravans, almost any random monster could have it's hunting grounds (Bullette, Preytons, Wyverns, Owlbears). I created an undead encounter near Dragonspear to setup a later adventure I'm working on for that location. I also created an inn along the way. It really is wide open since it's the wilds.

Any input will be much appreciated. Thank you!:)

Everyone is the main character of their story
Thank you so much for this!
