Hi Folks! A group of us a running a bunch of one-shots for one of my university clubs in a few weeks, and I was just looking for some feedback on a couple of points.
Firstly, at least a couple of other DMs are running 'beginner' one-shots, and I'm planning to make mine 'beginner friendly', but still hoping there will be a bit challenge for any more experienced players to join in. That said, I'm debating if I should run the one-shot at level 1 or 3. With other sessions throughout the week focusing on beginners, I'm assuming there won't really be any brand-new players, and I think level 3 will offer some fun options without being too overwhelming for beginners. It also allows me some more freedom in planning. Not sure if others have any opinions or recommendations though.
Second, the structure of the adventure itself. We're looking to limit the sessions to about 4-5 hours at most, so nothing to epic! My current plan is the crazy old man in the village tries to convince the party of young adventurers he was once the king of a great kingdom, and sends the party to reclaim his treasure from his dragon guarded castle. They'll have to travel through a forest, encountering things like the typical pack of wolves, find a wizards tower where it's actually just three kobolds in a robe, and other basic challenges. Eventually they'll come to the "castle", which is actually just an old treehouse, and be able to reclaim relics from the old man's childhood. My questions are, are there any recommended encounters for this type of adventure, and what do you think would make a good ending boss for this adventure?
I don't know of any readily available around these parts, but Kobold Press has a number of one-shot collections called Prepared! I've done one of them and it was fun and fit into a few hours.
