We all know the DMG states you should expect 4 short rests in a day however in my experience that is rarely the case. I would be curious to see in practice how many short rests are actually being afforded in practice.
In general I would expect PCs to take a short rest after each encounter where they're practically able to do so, unless they're going to take a long rest., or the encounter didn't actually cost any resources that can usefully be recovered in a short rest. If you're actually running a six encounter day, where the encounters are distinct and not chained, sure, I can see four short rests, but IME that's not the usual situation.

Umm no. DMG p 84
"THE ADVENTURING DAY Assuming typical adventuring conditions and average luck, most adventuring parties can handle about six to eight medium or hard encounters in a day. If the adventure has more easy encounters, the adventurers can get through more. If it has more deadly encounters, they can handle fewer."
"SHORT RESTS In general, over the course of a full adventuring day, the party will likely need to take two short rests, about one third and two-thirds of the way through the day."
The number in the DMG is TWO short rests/day ... not four. In my experinece, 2-3 short rests is typical depending on how many encounters there are in the day, how many resources are expended and how many short rest classes are in the party. Monks, warlocks and fighters particularly like short rests for example.
