My characters are currently on a mission from the warlock's patron where they must go from Waterdeep to Calimport. They have horses, but even with the horses it is going to take them around 45 days. We were running the Storm Lord's Thunder campaign before I took the characters on this side campaign, so the characters have access to some northern teleportation circles and are wondering if there are southern teleportation circles that they can use to get them there faster. Does anyone know of any southern teleportation circles (or any ways to speed up travel in general)? Thank you so much!
Teleportation circles are wherever you damn well say they are.
I would say that allowing random adventurers the sigil sequence for a teleportation circle would endebt the wizard who told them to the one whose circle they are travelling to. And whoever tells them should make it clear that the party would owe them a MAJOR favour in return. You can decide what this is. It could be a side quest, a twist, a tie-in, whatever you want. But it's an interesting opportunity.
If the wizard just takes them there without telling them the sequence directly, they would owe him a smaller favour.
Maybe the two wizards are good friends, maybe they're bitter rivals who resent the occasions where they have to work with each other.
Maybe there's no one to tell them the secret at all, and they have to find out the sequence by stealing papers or something. There are a lot of different avenues you can go down to make the whole thing feel interesting.
What you shouldn't do is get stuck because you're looking for "canon" circles in the Forgotten Realms setting. Your canon is unique. These places are wherever you say they are. It's YOUR campaign and YOUR version of the Realms.
Just say, OK 45 days have gone by it was a long tedious journey, but the Bard wrote a great ballad along the way.
In my world I have colored portals. Once you have sufficient permissions you can attune yourself to a portal. You can then teleport yourself to a different portal of the same color that you have attuned yourself to. And I have a limit that you can only do it 1 time a week.
Not that it speeds up initial travel, but it makes getting back easy.
I generally don't worry about long distance travel. My characters took a boat journey for 10 days to cross the sea and I had them roll several chances for an encounter. No encounters and it took minutes.
