I wanted to create a Truman Show type illusion where you reach a certain point where no ones supposed to travel passed. When anyone gets through they realize the rest of the world beyond is just a barren desert because the resources have been stripped. Is there a mass hallucinatory terrain type spell I can use? Or maybe a magic item I can tweak to create a similar effect?
The easy way is to say it was put in place by a powerful wizard using an ancient ritual, the specifics of which have been lost to time. Unless there’s a story reason to make it RAW, or reproducible by the PCs, you can always just make up something like that.
Hallucinatory Terrain can still work for you. Agreed that it's only 150 foot cube and lasts 24 hours, but a simple solution to that is that it is powered by some sort of ancient arcane machine to increase it's range/duration.
If you want something with a little more power, range, and capacity, then Mirage Arcane might work better. It lasts for 10 days, has the range of 1 mile and can offer more "realism" to the effect.

That’s just the ticket. Thank you kindly!
