So I was wondering, would it be possible to use the Iron Flask to symbolize the pact of the chain warlock? As in the flask itself is the contract to the pact.
You mean like the creature in the flask is your familiar? Going for a Pokémon vibe?
The flask seems to have slightly different rules from the spell, but it seems like something you could work out with your DM if you want to flavor it that way. If it really gets to be a problem, Maybe even just use an iron flask, as opposed to THE iron flask magic item and say it’s a material component for the spell.

It was just a thought that came to mind. Like the creature in the flask was willing to be you patron in return for releasing them.
Well it certainly sounds cool, and sometimes that can trump what’s written down. Really what matters is if your DM is ok with it, not us on the boards.
Sounds like the Genie of the Noble Court UA Patron. It becomes a spellcasting focus for your Warlock things, and as you gain levels there are a few things you can use it to do.

If you already released the creature in the flask, it's an origin story, since the creature is no longer in the flask. Given that 'the only way to determine the type of creature is to open the flask', it seems likely that you can't communicate with the inhabitant without freeing it, which would make it hard to make a pact.

Fair point. How would you suggest circumventing that issue so it makes a bit more sense story wise?

Well, I'd probably just use a custom magic item rather than a pre-existing item, which also has the benefit of not giving a low level PC a Legendary item. If it's not reusable, trapping something in a flask would just be a nonstandard variant on Imprisonment (though a demon trapped in Minimus Containment seems pretty viable anyway).

So would that in theory be used as like a contract for a warlock pact?
Just a random idea that came to mind as I read the posts... so don't expect something too thought out, heh.
If you wanted to put a bit of a twist on this, it could very well be that some powerful entity wants the creature in the bottle to never be let loose and is willing to be your patron to keep the creature contained? That way you can keep the Iron Flask as-is, with a bit of a risk-reward in place. Keep the creature contained to gain a patron, or release the creature for a temporary ally, but lose your patron.
Same situation, just the source is different. The flask is still your focus (produce the flask to show your patron the creature is still contained), with an added element of urgency to maybe keep the flask safe.

Hu . Now that I think about it does.
