So officially the Range on this spell is "Self". I have a storyline where I want an NPC to have this spell cast on them - and without their awareness. I DM the thing so I know I can just make it so... but I'm looking for ways to make it more compelling plot-wise and looking for brainstorm ideas.
How would you design this scenario? Young human girl who wants more than anything to be a Magizoologist when she grows up and her class has a field trip today to visit a zoo full of magic animals ( in Faerun) . Our party is being paid to protect said little girl. Badguy (undefined) wants to trick her into separating from rest of the group by secretly casting the spell on her and making her think she can talk to magic animals naturally and then use that to deceive her into leaving the rest of the group
Have the Badguy be a sorcerer, or have one in his employ, with a DM-fiat homebrew metamagic option. Probably the latter - the Badguy's chief magical henchman is a sorcerer with the extremely rare ability to twist spells that normally can only affect the caster into affecting another target of their choice. Badguy keeps him around as a super valuable Buff Boi, and uses him as part of this scheme.
It's still homebrew, but it's the sort of homebrew that suggests more about the world and seems like it should fit, rather than just "DM fiat, go with it." Also gives your BBEG a super interesting partner in crime and lets you have fun with certain buff spells affecting things the players aren't prepared for them to affect.
