For my Curse of Strahd campaign, I have it set so that the Sunsword item is in the possession of an NPC.
The party is set to encounter him at the Argynvostholt location, in the possession of Vladimir Horngaard. With regard to the "Fortunes of Ravenloft," it is stated that Vladamir will not part with the treasure in his possession willingly unless the beacon has been lit. My party has not lit the beacon at this location, so he will not want to part with the Sunsword.
My question, is can he USE the Sunsword, in the event that he fights the party? I think it would be a cool way to reveal the legendary weapon to the party, but I have reason to believe that this might not make sense. The Sunsword is effectively a "sun blade" BUT it is also sentient. Its personality is that it wants to destroy Strahd. This introduces two issues I could see for if Vladimir could use it.
1) Vladimir is a revenant (an undead), so the sword might not want to help him on the basis of him being an undead (like Strahd)
2) Although Vladimir also hates Strahd, he does not want to destroy him. Rather, he wants to see Strahd suffer for all eternity stuck in the land of Barovia. So his "final goal" for Strahd is at odds with the goal of the sword
What do you think? Personally, I am thinking I will have the NPC use this item regardless of where this thread goes (unless there are compelling arguments against), but I was curious about what others thought about this little conundrum I came too (especially from those who have played or run this module before)

It's a sentient item. It would probably be unwilling to permit itself to be used against people who are trying to fight Strahd (assuming the PCs are doing so, and it is aware of that fact, neither of which is certain). It's not otherwise unusable.
