My players are two 7-8th grade players, so they do crazy things. But one of my players plays their character like a barbarian or a 'hack and slash' character, and is quite bored when he isn't fighting, and my other player is a RP player, and would like to talk his way out of things then anything else. As such, I haven't found a encounter that entertains both of them. Even on all of the fighting, the RP player tries to negotiate, but then the Hack and slash character tries to kill them. An example of their opposite personality is when they went to town, one NPC said they should go to a house, but the RP player just went to the Inn, and the Hack and slash character looks up from his phone and says he'll "do what ever the NPC ask him to do, as long as [he] gets to kill something." I am okay with their personalities, but I wonder if their is an encounter that entertains both of them.
Just for any info you would ask, the RP player is a Level 2 bard, the 'Hack and slash' character is a ranger at level 2. Also with the party is a level 2 rouge, another level 2 ranger, and a level 2 wizard. The World is in 1 town, and they have to protect the town from monsters, in a world where monsters are thought to be extinct and magic is thought of as evil.
Conflicting personalities can be difficult to manage and generally as a DM I would try to balance it by adding a variety of types of encounters to my game. Coming up with encounters that would consistently engage both players would be challenging but on occasion you could try something like a conflicted intelligent humanoid with a horde of mindless lackeys. While the role player try's to convince the master to call off the attack the hack and slasher is wading into the horde and cutting down the minions. The encounter ends when either method accomplishes the goal of stopping the main bad's assault.
