Hi I'm a new DM and haven't had a first session yet due to the COVID-19. Anyway, I was wondering if other DM's out there had any good tips on how to open up the first session or campaign in general. (Sorry if phrasing was bad, let me know if you did not understand it). Thank you.
The best advice you will get is going to be found in Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. His first few episodes address "your first game" and "your first session," such as this one:
I mean, I could type out some suggestions but nothing I write will be as good as his stuff.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.

Thank you very much, the first episode is already fantastic!
Colville hasn't just been doing this for 40 years... he's also very good at explaining things.
I would love to have him as a DM. :)

Start the campaign describing the gruesome death of a party... Gets their "expectations" in a proper place... ;-)
Will double down on @BioWizard's suggestion on Colville, he can explain/express things that I find easy to do, but hard to "get across" to others...
