New DM, looking to run this as my first campaign. I'm wondering if it's essential to use the pregenerated characters or if I can let my players roll their own? Thanks!
Either way is fine. That said, you shouldn't let your players roll for ability scores. To make sure balance and your own expectations as a DM are met --- use either Point Buy or the Standard Array,
If it’s the players’ first games, use pre-gens. If they have played even one game before, let them build their own. But you have to understand how a character is used before you can appreciate all the options available for building your own. But there’s no reason the adventure will work any less for not using the pre-gens.

Iron_Theurge is right, I only let my players use point buy or standard. It stops lucky players from being completely overpowered.
When the DM smiles, it is already to late.
