Please help me make sure my player doesn't feel lacking in power.
In my campaign I have a player that was a lvl 6 sorcerer, and now based on story wants to do the rest of the campaign leveling warlock to multiclass. It is a divine soul sorcerer and Arch-fey warlock. What should I be looking out for in possible lack of power for the player? I don't want them to feel too under-powered.
My main worry is the feeling of lack of potency in comparison to other casters in the group. Player does love being a utility caster so I am hoping they get some good use out of invocations.
Any advice or previous experience would be very helpful.
Ultimately, a warlock is a half-caster class, so they're going to feel underpowered compared to a full-caster. That's just the nature of multiclassing in this way. That can't be helped, if that's what they want to do - and as the DM you should be sure to express this to your player. Make sure they understand that they're multiclassing into a half-caster and, thus, will never get to full-caster capabilities.
A warlock is not a half-caster class, the problem is that they have a very different (encounter-based) spellcasting method, which does not stack with regular spellcasting. A wizard-9/cleric-9 can't cast any spells over 5th level, but has 9th level slots to cast the with. A sorcerer-9/warlock-9 can't cast any spells over 5th level, and also has no slots above 5th level, though he can use his warlock slots to cast sorcerer spells.
I suspect replacing a warlocks Pact Magic and Mystic Arcanum traits with regular spellcasting (using the warlock spell list) wouldn't be a net balance problem; it gets you more total spells available, but most of them are lower level spell slots and they refresh on a long rest instead of a short.
Although I didn’t take into consideration they are doing the rest of the campaign as a warlock and not just a couple levels. See how it goes, you may want to have them stumble upon some magic items through their journeys. Pearl of Power comes to mind or other stuff that can allow them to cast some cool spells or do some unique things.

They’ll be fine if they have Quickened spell + eldritch blast + agonizing blast. Thats 4 blasts at lvl 5. 6 blasts at lvl 11...
it’s actually a decent multi class imo.

Yeah, Warlock-2/Sorcerer X or Warlock-3/Sorcerer X seems totally viable.
