So, I usually run a couple of D&D groups for tweens and teens out of comic shops the old fashioned way with books and such. Obviously it has been dreadful not being able to play for all of us and I have been looking and looking for an online version that the kids and I can figure out, that works for everyone, etc. Today I decided enough is enough and stopped mucking around trying to figure out other options and just went for the upgraded tier on D&D Beyond and bought the players handbook so I could recreate all their character sheets from the hard copies I keep....which obviously was a mistake, but I think I just need to send them the pdf exports, have them log in to my campaign and then recreate the character sheets themselves, right?!?!
Anyway, it would also be nice to be able to use the free content for one of my groups that doesn't have a current campaign going....how do I add and use Dragon of IceSpire peak? I'm just so pitiful and confused. Please help
In order to use content from any given book, you need to purchase that book. Just having a subscription service doesn't give you access to all the books sadly.
But once you have that, it should automatically add to any campaigns you have content sharing enabled in.
If you have the right their on beyond, you can start a campaign and invite your players to it. Then they’ll have access to any and all of the books you bought. As for icespire peak, it’s currently available for free here. Check under the quarantine resources tab.
Thanks, Xalthu! I see Icespire Peak, but for example, to use the Player's handbook, when I clicked on that content, it had the option to buy it, which I did and then I enabled the sharing in my campaign and had my kid join the campaign from his account and he can access it there to make his character sheet, etc. I don't understand how to put Icespire Peak in though. I can view it, but how do I put it into my active campaign? I think that is the part I don't understand. We are like 90% done with Hoard of the Dragon Queen in one of my groups and it seems silly to buy that, especially without me understanding how to actually use it, but I figured I would try the free content in a group that is already done with their campaign to make sure I liked the system before buying Rise of Tiamat for the other group....
you are looking for roll20 if you want to play out Icespire Peak digitally, or you could use the map dndbeyond gives you, open it in a picture editing program, steam the program on discord or something and drag the tokens around.
Thank you very much, Godspeed and BramblefootDruid! I spent a month mucking around with FantasyGrounds delaying playing thinking it would work for what I want and such and it appears that I am either going to rebuy the player's handbook and such in Roll20 if just doing the Zoom meeting and paper don't work. I just misunderstood what I was able to do here and will just continue using it to make the character sheets I guess. Glad I didn't buy Hoard of the Dragon Queen for that last chapter :). Thanks again!
My group has been doing zoom and roll20. The first session was a bit iffy, but by the second we had it down pretty well. We use homebrew campaigns, so I can’t say how well a WoTC campaign works. There is a bit of a learning curve for roll20. Nothing too terrible, you should get the hang of it pretty quickly. I get the sense from my DM that there is a bit of time needed for setting up your stuff like tokens and environments. but that after it’s done the first time, you’re pretty much set. Or you could just go zoom with theater of the mind for combats. Then you don’t need roll20 at all.

Sadly you just have to go onto it and show them the pictures. You can't add it to the actual campaign
