So i have this crypt, which contains an artifact that can either unleash a god or seal them away and i dont want the party to just whilst up in the crypt and grab the device so i thought it would be cool if they had to do a few tasks to open the door. which i feel should take a few sessions at least any suggetions would be awesome.
First of all, try to come up with some twist. "Gotta Catch'em All" plots are done to death and your players will catch on.
As for the actual question: Maybe the gates are bound in magical chains that can only be cut open by a legendary magic weapon (legendary as in told of in legend, not the rarity) appropriate to your level, such as a Nine Lives Stealer, Flame Tongue or even the Sword of Kas
Otherwise, we have the standard Zelda "collect them all" type. Maybe they need one of each Elemental Gem?
It would be cool if they had to retrieve a key from some powerful being, such as a storm giant or a demon.
Or you could have a sealed stone entrance that requires something vague like the breath of a dragon, which would force them to get creative.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
In my campaign the players have been hired to collect spell components for a rich wizard, so a very similar setup. For mine I homebrewed a world with exotic and cool locations, and chose items that would prompt them to visit and explore those locations. For example, in my world a yuan-ti and dragon infested jungle, so I was semi-cryptic by having a "claw of a green worm" be a requirement. In the wererat-run town of theives (like vegas with no cops) a "head of a half-rat" is required. That sort of thing. Good luck :)
I'm new to DM-ing but maybe you could create monsters that the players have to battle and when they defeat them they drop an item and all the items come together to form a key?
