Fairly new DM here. I just picked up the Explore's guide to Wildemount and I am just about to run a new adventure. What do you all allow your players to read in the sourcebooks? I want info about the world that is give throughout the adventure to feel new when heard but I also want to give them some reading so they feel like they belong in the world. Any thoughts are welcome.
I say work with them on what their characters would know based on their origins, and perhaps allow them to roll checks involving certain areas to determine their knowledge.

I think it depends. For a sourcebook to a world, I'd probably say yes. When I thought I was going to play in FR, I got the SCAG and read that cover to cover just to get a sense of the world. I would not have read the actual adventure we were playing, had we been playing one. But I also told the DM I was doing that and made sure it was OK.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
In my World Anvil page, I put in lore that would generally be known to start, and then I update or add pages or categories with new stuff as they encounter it. The sourcebook equivalent would be to have them read certain chapters at appropriate times.
This would assume you trust them to only read the parts you assign... and that there are no Hermione Grangers (or BioWizards) in your group who cannot resist an unread book....

Entirely up to you. Personally I don’t have them read anything. But I do help them find a place for how their characters fit into the world.
