I’m after some advice on how the whole magic circle, summoning, binding sequence works.
magic circle allows me to hold a creature,
Planar binding allows me to bind the creature
But how do I summon it in the first place? Is that the Planar Ally spell?

Pretty much. Though you could really use any of the summon spells to get it into the circle.
