So here's what's up: the campaign that I'm running started off using with Lost Mine of Phandelver and everyone wanted to continue to play with their characters so I decided to purchase the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist campaign. The conundrum lies with the choices my party made along their way. Right now, the party just teamed up with Nezznar, the black spider in order to defeat the flaming skull so they can all get access to the forge of spells. The team up happened because Nezznar is Zhentarim and he found the common bond with the rogue assassin who also became an agent earlier in the game. Nezznar explains that he is doing this to help defeat the Xanathars in the heated battle that is happening in Waterdeep at the start of the Dragon Heist campaign and he's trying to save his clansmen because they were falsely accused for something they didn't do and open war has broken out. (cool tie in, eh?)
The problem is that the LMoP booklet says that Nezznar is supposed to betray the party should they team up to defeat the flaming skull. I guess my question is this: Do I keep Nezznar as an ally should the party continue to stay with The Black Network Zhentarim and, if possible, is there room in the story where Nezznar might fit in?
I'm very VERY new to all this and this is my first time DMing. I'm also an slow reader that gets easily distracted when reading D&D books because my brain wants to run away with creativity instead of just buckling down and reading the main facts first. I'm trying to read all of this plus Dungeon of the Mad Mage, to give them the full Waterdeep experience. I'm just hoping someone who has run both campaigns might have a little insight and suggestions on how I can best tie in the two campaigns together.
The books say a lot of things. You can feel free to ignore parts if there are more fulfilling options based on how your game is progressing. If you want to use Nezzar as part of a story hook to move the party towards Waterdeep, then there is nothing wrong about doing that.
EDIT: Having run both Dragon Heist and Mad Mage, the best place you may want to re-introduce Nezzar is in place of Rizzeryl, the Zent Drow Mage on floor 2 of the Mad Mage Dungeon. That should give you time to let your players tour Waterdeep and do Dragon Heist on their own before re-connecting with their ally.
Thanks Metamongoose!! I appreciate your input and reminding me that not everything in the booklet is set in stone!! I will look into it to see how it fits!
