Hi! So I'm a first time DM and a few of my players are homebrewing deities which I'm totally fine with, except I'm trying to get a better understanding of what the aspects of these deities are and how to build them properly for my players so that way it's all like, cohesive I suppose? And I understand what the source material means when it says that say, Sehanine Moonbow is the Elven goddess of the moon, but then I don't understand what it means when it says "portfolios" like, the forgotten realms wiki says that her portfolios are death, dreams and travel. Are those like, minor areas she has influence over, akin to how say, Greek gods had a huge laundry list of things they presided over and controlled (for example, how Apollo is the sun god but also has influence over medicine, music, poetry, plague, etc) or are they something different?
Normally I wouldn't bother with worrying about this but 2 of my players included this information and I want to make sure I understand what these things are.
In many cases they're referring to 3rd edition divine domains, but it's basically areas of influence or special interest. For homebrew deities, I'd just ask the players what they think it means.
