Next week I am giving my players a week of downtime, during which is the “Celebration of Flowers” in spring and there is a beauty pageant. The winner is crowed that year’s “bloom” or “blossom” in the name of the goddess of beauty.
The bard has already said that they are participating, and are super excited.
I want to roleplay out a bit of the contest with npcs and the pc. But HOW is the question, what should I do? Thoughts?
I mean, if we're going by normal pageantry, there tends to be segments and rounds dedicated to things like formalwear (gowns and nice hair and makeup and stuff), there tends to be a sports modeling section (the stereotypical "swimsuit" segment, but you could call it something else; more or less just a segment to show off body definition and fitness), a talent section (standard talent show stuff- juggling, music, etc.), and an interview segment (that part where pageant queens tend to answer with things like "making world peace" or "ending world hunger" for every question under the sun :P).
If you want to get a little more specific though, keep in mind that the goal of a pageant is to reflect all different kinds of beauty- inner, outer, mental, emotional, etc. I'd highly recommend that you think about things that are valued as beautiful within your realm and give your contestants opportunities to work towards those standards. Another thing to consider is that different character races might value beauty in different ways (i.e. stereotypically, Orcs may value strength while Elves may value grace), so finding a means of compromising between different demographical standards of beauty might be an interesting challenge too.
Lastly, consider your judges and how you would like for things to be evaluated in the contest. Is it just going to be you as the DM who is judging? Are you going to have set characters in place who have their own biases to whom the PCs can appeal to? Perhaps if the party is willing to play along, any non-participating players could opt into the fun not by competing but by judging their party members and NPC opponents if you feel that they could do so without bias?
Lots of fun room to explore- I think you've got a fun time on your hands! : D
If you want to throw in some drama, sketch out personalities for a few of the other contestants and throw in some mean girl (mean boy?) sabotage shenanigans for the bard to deal with.
You may want to homebrew some rules on hair pulling just in case.
