Hey all, need some help with a storyline. I'm running a campaign and in our next session we'll have one and possibly two players out for the session. I'm stealing a page from Critical Role and basically working out so that those players were kidnapped and held for ransom by a baddie from earlier in the campaign. The party's basic options will be to rescue their buddies from a pirate ship or search the town for an NPC they helped escape from said baddie earlier. Capture her and bring her to the baddie and get their buddies back.
Anyone know of an outline out there for the 2nd option? I'm looking for something where the party would have to find clues, put the pieces together in order to track down this missing NPC and capture her. Even general ideas would be helpful. This is my first time DMing, so it doesn't have to be too complex.
Be careful with capturing PCs. Players tend to hate it. Even if they know that the DM is doing it for an OOC reason like dealing with missing players, they tend to dislike having it happen. It's also really hard to time this sort of thing, so what happens if it goes long, the players come back, and their PCs are still stuck in prison? Do you have a contingency plan for that?
As for how to look for the missing NPC... I think the best thing is to decide where she is and what happened to her and who would know about it. Then you can let the players tell you what they are doing to look for her and when they turn up something you can tell them what it is. You will need to pepper enough clues around the town that they don't have to walk into one specific tavern or talk to one specific NPC.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
Thanks for the input. I think we'll be okay with the capturing of a PC. Our group is a close knit group of friends that are all first time players, so I think it will go over okay.
Regarding the thoughts for the NPC, thanks again. That will give me a good idea on how to structure. I'd like to come up with additional intrigue and possibly puzzles to solve, but getting the basics out of the way first will help.
