To start out our Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign, I'm having the party travel from Luskan to Ten-towns via caravan. But I'm really not sure how to calculate the travel time for the trip? Would a caravan travel slower than a normal person given the complexities of moving a larger group? (Does Horde of the Dragon Queen give a caravan travel speed since part of the adventure takes part on one?) Does traveling through the Spine of the World slow the pace as well? And are there any references in the Drizzt novels about how long it takes to get between the two towns?
My the map, it seems to be about 200mi via the road through Huddlestone. How might you calculate the travel time?
Horse-drawn or mule-drawn freight wagons cover 15 miles per day, depending on conditions. The animals need one day off after every six days of hauling to recover from their work.
Looking at the map of the region, I'd say working out the travel time as if it was 200 miles would give you a reasonably accurate time-frame. I'd note that at various points within the Spine of the Mountain, blizzards will block the whole pass:
Each casting of the spell leaves the Frostmaiden weakened, with just enough divine power left to barricade the mountain pass with blizzards and churn the Sea of Moving Ice with blistering winds. Such measures discourage travelers from approaching or leaving Icewind Dale, further isolating the region.
One they're 'on the map' for Icewind Dale, I'd have this become more evident, possibly after one nights rest, they look behind and their path has become just a mountain of ice and snow.
