Background: I'm running a heavily modified Waterdeep Dragon Heist set in Faerun. We'll probably play through Curse of Strahd with the same characters next.
One of my PCs is a fire genasi who was raised by gnomes. She was basically found near their settlement with no indication of who her birth parents are or if she even had any. I'm thinking it's likely that when she gets her hands on the Stone of Golorr, she's going to want to ask it about where she came from. Only I'm really stumped for ideas! So, does anyone have any cool thoughts for where a fire genasi might come from and/or why she might have been abandoned at birth?
Maybe one of her parents was a genie bound to a magic item, which was owned by an evil wizard (or maybe even Strahd himself if you're sure you're gonna play that). Through a certain sequence of events the evildoer's magic item was destroyed, freeing the genie. While free, said genie fell in love with a normal human and produced a miracle baby (the player genasi) but the couple was pursued by the evildoer and the genie was killed protecting his/her baby, but not before the human parent was able to spirit away the child to a gnome community for a more peaceful life. Boom.
Or... the human parent is dead and the genie is still alive, bound to the evildoer's magic item still.
Ooh, I love that. I think I'll go with the 'genie still bound to magic item' version, that will give me the chance to point her research skills in the direction of Barovia ahead of time. Thanks for the help!

Sometimes simple can be better.
