What is Random Encounter Monday? Well, it is where I take a randomly generated combination of monsters and write a suitable encounter as a design challenge!
This is week 22, so we're looking at a 2nd level party to toy with!
The prompt for this encounter is using a hobgoblin and two nupperibos! Always fun to throw some friends into the mix, but some things to consider is how do the creatures interact and under what situation do the heroes encounter them?
A Devilish Dilemma As he grew up, an ambitious young hobgoblin named Graznak came to realize that he would never become a captain of his tribe through his innate skills alone. Desperate for power, Graznak turned towards the devils of the Nine Hells, pledging his soul in exchange for supernatural abilities. But when it was discovered he had denounced worship of the god Maglubiyet in favor of the devils, he was cast out of his tribe, forced to wander the desolate wastes beyond his homeland. Now, instead of power, Graznak wants only revenge against his tribe for bringing him so low.
Instead of attacking the characters, Graznak attempts to enlist them as allies to aid him in defeating his tribe. If they do help Graznak defeat the other hobgoblins, he turns on them as soon it benefits him. If the players refuse to aid him, Graznak curses them and shatters an amulet given to him when he sold his soul, summoning two nupperibos to aid him. The nupperibos act on Graznak's turn and fight to the death. If Graznak is reduced to 4 HP or fewer, he flees or attempts to bargain with the players. A DC 13 Insight check allows a player to see through Graznak's deception: he has nothing left to give.
However, a thorough search of Graznak's body reveals the infernal contract he signed with an unknown devil. A player who can speak Infernal or who succeeds on a DC 15 Intelligence check can understand the vague premise of the contract: In return for his soul, Graznak was granted supernatural strength, so long as he remained in his tribe. And in return for the amulet, Graznak was to assert an infernal foothold in the region.
Who could Graznak's mysterious patron be? And why do they have such a keen interest in the region in particular?
