Hello! Ive taken the request of our party DM, to take the game off his shoulders and run a one off for his birthday.
Im probably putting too much stress into this, but Im trying to justify a snow golem at the top of this mountain thats causing yetis to move closer to civilization and threatening the locals. The problem Im caught up on is Who put thay golem there?
Im picturing the Golem being violent, and unable to fulfill its demands, but what those are/were I have no idea, Ive hit a wall. Im not sure of this is the kind of thing that no ones gonna question in a one off, but knowing my DM he might expect an answer even if they dont arrive to it in game.
Well, usually someone like a powerful Wizard creates a Golem.
What if the Wizard had some sort of tower up there at the mountain top, and built the Golem to defend it. Unfortunately, some people from the town, not knowing about the wizard tower (since the wizard is long gone, dead or off in another plane, and no one in the local town remembers he was ever up there), decide to go mountain-climbing and "get too close" to the tower. The Golem, incorrectly interpreting this to be an "invasion" from the town, sends out its minions to take the town out because it thinks they are a "threat" to its master's abode.
Whether the wizard would have wanted it to do this or not is a flavor to taste kind of thing.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.

Some sort of powerful spellcaster that wants the mountain cleared so they can have their secluded tower built on top of said mountain? If it's just a one-shot session (or two), then you don't really have to flesh out the NPC spellcaster very much, since the main BBEG for this adventure is your snow golem. I would assume that the spellcaster is either some sort of archmage/wizard or draconic [white] sorcerer that focuses on cold-based spells (hence the mountain tower and snow golem).
Golem was instructed to clear away anything that might bother the spellcaster's arcane studies. Golem has taken on the task with a single-minded determination, but it perceives that nearly anything is a potential disturbance. It started by chasing away the "biggest threats" which were the yeti tribes living on the mountain, but now it's also chasing away deer, rabbits, and birds that come too close. In fact, in its simplistic state of mind, it sometimes even flails at snow flurries that it mistakes as invading elementals.
Will the spellcaster eventually return someday to build their tower? Or was the golem abandoned because something else happened? That depends on you and your DM, since the one-shot might create a plot hook for something later...or it's just a one shot and doesn't really matter once the golem situation is handled.
I really like the idea that the caster left it there and didnt expect anything to go wrong before they got back. Theres some settlements nearby that could entice such a bold and stupid spellcaster, thank you!
You could look at Edward scissor hands for inspiration here. Gollum created by a magical user who has died, the only company it has is yetis, or maybe it is trying to use the yetis as a way to bring other humans up to it hoping they can free it

You're welcome, and best wishes on running your one-shot adventure!
