So, my wizard just got the web spell. They have a view of restraining enemies in the web, then setting the web on fire (seriously, are all wizards pyromaniacs, or just mine?) I think they'd be better off leaving enemies restrained rather than trading it for a relatively paltry 2d4 fire damage, but hey, it's their game. Anyway...
Question is - if they set the fire at a point on the web, say with a torch or prestidigitation, does the whole web combust in one turn, or must they wait for it to spread? Seems to me like it should spread from the point of combustion, but wizard seems to be of the opinion the whole web combusts in a single turn (of course, because that's most beneficial to her plan).
I know rules for fire spreading aren't well defined, but I figured I'd roll a D4 at that number of adjacent squares combust (if there is web, or other combustible material present in that square.)
RAW for web - “The webs are flammable. Any 5-foot cube of webs exposed to fire burns away in 1 round, dealing 2d4 fire damage to any creature that starts its turn in the fire.” So I read that as from the point of ignition a 5ft cube will burn and deal the subsequent damage at the start of that player’s next turn, spreading to another cube for the following round.
I would probably rule the 5' cube at the point of ignition in the first turn and then the rest of it the next turn (I'm sure there would be a 5' segment that wouldn't be in it if it burned outward, but... it's that much more to track for not much gain).
Depends on whether you wanna be fully loyal to the rules of realistic. Since the spell says that "Any 5-foot cube of webs exposed to fire burns away in 1 round." I guess you could argue that the fire shouldn't even spread, since being adjacent to fire Technically doesn't mean you are esposed to it, but that sounds like full on Petty Mode. I'd make it spread from the initial point of combustion.
I would rule...... 5ft area burns away this round, and after that anyone else in it would have advantage on the STR check to break free given how the web is now weakened. Next round, the rest of it burns.
I mean, that's probably the third round anyhow, combat will usually be over by the end of that round or the next (usually).
