So for some background... My lvl 8 party is currently investigating surface raids by drow and have been contracted to venture into the underdark and find the drow settlement. They successfully did this and are on their way back to the surface, helping about 15 prisoners they freed. They may also intercept another slave transport carrying another 30 or so people.
The main point I was hoping to get some ideas for is getting these people and the party across a huge underground lake. My current plan is to have a raft that the drow use that is small enough for only part of the group to use at once, so the party have to make multiple trips across to get everyone across. TO make this interesting I am hoping to have cloakers attacking the raft as it goes across, but was wondering if any of you had any smart ideas to make it more than just combat with cloakers murdering the occasional refugee. On top of that any tips for making the actual journey more interesting would be greatly appreciated
There is also an aboleth and an army of chuul's in the lake but thats an entirely different problem...
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.
How about a variation on the fox, chicken, grain puzzle? Split the groups to 3 in-fighting factions A, B, C, each of 15 people. Neither A&B nor B&C can be left unsupervised or they'll fight, but A&C get along fine. Ferry only takes 15 people, plus 4 people to row (only the party members are strong enough, or some other reason it must be all of them).
Solution - take faction B across, leave them there. Return and collect faction A. Take faction A across, unload them, and load faction B again. Take faction B back to the start, unload them, and collect faction C. Take faction C across, leave them. Go back and collect faction B.
