I've been using Midjourney to generate some battle maps with mixed results. Has anyone else attempted this? Anyone who has had success please share your tips and tricks!
When Midjourney is able to generate natural scenes in 2d, those scenes always include some body of water. It seems unable to generate savannah or wasteland from the correct perspective. It really struggles to generate 2d interior scenes unless described as floor plans.
Any advice on terms that might work to describe the correct perspective/orientation, specifically for indoor environments? Here is an example that I think came out pretty well. I've done about 100 more.
[insert shocked emoji here]😱 I never thought to try this, but it makes perfect sense now seeing it. (I expended all my free slots but don't do enough to warrant a subscription.)

Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.

I decided to go for it with the subscription because I get tons of reference images that I can save forever and it's worth it to me, but I get why other might not feel that way. So far I've been able to generate hundreds of maps and anime character references for the admittedly pricy 30$/month subscription fee. Most character art isn't quite perfect yet but it's getting close. Most of the battle Maps I generate are perfect, if you like the style that emulates paintings. Here are a few more...
Rugged Coastline almost always turns out well.
I like this snowfield pretty well, but snowy terrain generally doesn't produce the best results.
Dry Mountains are hit and miss but some come out pretty well
I'm having pretty good luck with part of your prompt, but I've found that replacing a few key words to try getting a specific solution actually works pretty well. I will say, for the workings of creating battlemaps, the "top down view of _____________ directly above looking down" prompt that you mentioned is seemingly exactly what the program needs in order to work. So kudos for putting that somewhere, lol.

I've found that recently Midjourney has begun to respond to actual "make me a battlemap" prompts better than it used to. If you have secrets please share them!
I made this one with the prompt:
/imagine a tabletop rpg map in orthographic top down style depicting the interior of a temple devoted to elemental water surrounded by ocean tides
This is similar one that I made with the prompt:
/imagine A tabletop rpg map in orthographic top down style depicting the interior of a temple devoted to elemental fire surrounded by lava flows --ar 3:2
These are incredible! Going to be testing this out later and will post some of the good ones!
If you do I'd love to see them. The system definitely struggles more with exterior environs right now so please share your discoveries!
/imagine a tabletop rpg map in orthographic top down style depicting a jungle clearing with scattered camp supplies --ar 3:2
/imagine a tabletop rpg map in orthographic top down style depicting the interior of several roofless cabins surrounded by a worn cobblestone wall --ar 3:2
This thread is about six months old, has there been any further progress on this topic.
Very few people seem to want to post their maps. I've seen tons of people on Pinterest trying to sell maps obviously made in Midjourney. Here are pretty nice one that I made with v6 ALPHA
/imagine Building floor plan, in the style of realistic landscapes with soft, tonal colors, enchanted forest, botanical gardens, muted colorscape mastery
Oh wow, that looks awesome. I can tell you're really getting the hang of it. Have you played with Stable Diffusion yet? I made the below using one of your prompts but can't justify paying membership with Midjourney.
For me it pretty much starts and stops with Midjourney. Not only is it the only AI I've found that generates orthographic flat maps, it also generates the best character art I've ever seen.
Below is a Kobold I really like. 100% Midjourney. I'm aware of no human artist whose work so closely represents what I think is cool. I know it's not a map but it's one of many reasons the subscription is worth it to me.
I have mixed opinions on AI art in general, however, for personal use, all in good fun... These are really dope! Its cool that new terrain settings are made available with access to tools like this!
I have been using MidJourney to create images of NPCs and player characters.
Thanks for sharing these, they are interesting and provide some inspiration for me to dive into trying to create some maps for my game. I imaging that I'll have midjourney create some maps and then recreate on the battle map with pen & ink as players explore. The beautiful MidJourney renderings I will use for notes after the session.

Ooo this is really good, what prompts do you use for these?
Thanks! AI is weird... Even thought I didn't exactly "make" these I feel a certain connection to them and I'm glad someone else thinks they're cool!
My best results have been with the prompt /imagine top down view of rugged terrain directly above looking down --v4
Aspect ratio is fun to change with some maps. You can use --ar 2:3 or --ar 3:2 for taller of wider rectangular maps.
I've had some luck describing the terrain as well. Replacing the word "terrain" in the prompt with "waterfall"
yielded some of my favorites.
"Crystal Landscape" was another fun one.

Tidal Pools came out really well...
I didn't post a good example of dry mountains... Here are some better ones.

Heres some of the best so far. Midjourney alpha V6

I have a strange request, can you make a map similar to the pool rooms?
Not sure if you mean the pool room map posted above but if so then yes!
Here are a couple of variations.

These are fantastic. How to you get the high resolutions and clarity?
