Hello! At my local DnD AL we seem to never reach higher then tier 2, and we have not gotten to any really good looking armors. Stat wise it does not really matter, but some of the players have been discussing about what they legally could do within the AL rules to add "cosmetic fluff". They wanted a way that seems good both from roleplaying and AL rules perspective. Their idea was to get a wizard blacksmithing and leatherworking, and then the fabricate spell. He would then be able to fabricate non magical armors if he had enough materials at hand. Then fabricate would be used on some of the defeated monsters, for example use it on the defeated giant crocodile to make a crocodile leather armor for the rogue instead of his normal leather armor.
No higher AC bonuses to any of the armors then what can allready be found in the rules, but cosmetic "fluff" that will look nice.
I think as far as AL is concerned, you can have whatever cosmetic changes you want at no cost.
You want leather armor to be croc skin? Done.
You want hand crossbow to be gun? Sure.
You want dragonborn to be half dragon instead? No problem.
I agree. As far as AL goes you can say and role play whatever you like BUT it must have NO mechanical or role play benefit whatsoever. It is just for character style purposes.
If you want to say that your armor is made of crocodile skin and is otherwise the same as leather armor - fine no problem.
If you want to say that your scale mail armor is made of hardened wood and not metal and so your druid can wear it - no. Unless you have a very permissive AL DM, druids don't wear metal armor, so an AL DM can say no to something like this which gives a mechanical advantage.
Do you want to call your crossbow a gun? Sure but you still need a hand free for loading, the ammunition still takes up the same weight and volume as bolts and it sounds the same as a crossbow when fired. You couldn't use the sound of your "gun" to try to scare a herd of animals into running for example. (In addition, guns are actually available in AL either in season 8 Waterdeep or in Curse of Strahd among other places with specific rules for the smokepowder and ammunition used)
Describing your Dragonborn as a half-dragon or with more draconic features than usual is also fine ... however, don't expect NPCs to think of them as a half dragon. Nor would there be any mechanical changes by claiming to be a half dragon. Mechanically and role play wise, the character is a dragonborn.

However, if the goal is to manufacture a breast plate, half-plate or plate armor cheaper than available in the PHB - not going to happen.
If the goal is to make armor out of unusual materials to bypass restrictions on worn armor types by classes or races - also not likely to happen.
If you want to make some pretty armor with curlicues, flowers and butterflies that looks stunning and stylish :) ... go for it.

On this note, AL does let you take the craft an item downtime activity. So you can craft a non-magic item for half gp cost, by spending an appropriate number of downtime days instead.
The idea was to take "trophys" from the kills. Or in WoW terms "transmog" so your current armor ramains the same but LOOK different. But just to "reskin" without any effort or reason (like a guy who play with a winter soldier metal arm without any reason why he has it) seem wrong somehow.
Othervise - have you guys found any good looking armor in AL? In tier 1 or 2? It could be that we got unlucky with the adventures they run for us, but we have not seen much armors and none different/unique looking.
Fun idea about reskinnig a hand crossbow to a gun! I had not thought about it myself, I gave up that idea of using a gun in AL when I read that gunslingers was not allowed. Does anyone have a good "roleplaying explenation" to why the gun is more or less silent (as a hand crossbow)? A silencer function or a permanent silence spell on the gun, that is too weak to block out all sound is the best I can come up with.
