So I am currently running my second campaign in a homebrew world with my friends. This campaign I mostly had an idea of the group battling a cult which was trying to open a gate to Tiamat with either the blood of magical children or getting five magical dragon masks within 200 feet of each other. (Kinda of Tyranny of Dragons) So my thought on this is players can at most get 3 masks the cultists already have two masks and when the players simply go to finish the cultists off woolah distance is met and the gate will open unless the players do some serious Arcana digging and don't bring the other 3 super buffing masks with them.
However one of my players came up with the coolest backstory ever, that they are actually a Griffin whose blood makes gemstones, and due to this a group known as Court of Ashes is hunting her down as she is the last griffin and they can bleed her to death for a fortune. She makes a deal with a witch and the witch gives her a potion and poof! She's no longer a griffin but a Changeling. Now here is the fun part the whole game the party will be hounded by Bounty Hunters whom have only vague knowledge. They when hired are given an amulet which glows if within five miles of the griffin and are told they can ID the Griffin by the Griffins' blood.
So the first Hunters they met were actually paying a village of dwarves for drops of blood, because they knew they could identify the griffin from even two drops of blood. However none of the players wanted to part with a prick of blood for 2 gold coins. So the Hunters became suspicious and plotted an ambush. They shot the party up riddled them with crossbow bolts then fled. The party was kinda like wtf! They just shot us and ran!! However the hunters returned and scavenged the area and located the crossbow bolt covered in gemstones, so they are now certain the Griffin is in the party.
So the party after the ambush even became suspicious of each other, and pricked each other's fingers however the Griffin in disguise still refused to be pricked so now even the Party is suspicious of her.
They are only level 3 already so much fun. What do you think about this mayhem?
Love it! You've built lots of tension, and it seems to be organic and natural. I like that you used their backstory for it. I would only caution not to let that character dominate the session and give the other players time to shine. You know your group best. Watch them and try to keep everyone interested.
