Not sure if this has been started any where before but I wanted to be able to go to a place where people shared combat encounters they enjoyed with others and for people to share any tips they may have to tweak a posted encounter to make it better.
For example, I had an encounter where my players were captured by Drow and were forced to fight for the Drow's enjoyment. They were put into a maze that I had designed with 12 walls which would open and close on initiative 20 based on a roll of 2D6 with 2 of the walls correlating to one number on the dice and the state of the walls would change from open to close or close to open if that number came up. I wanted it to be random because some of my players have a problem with meta-gaming and I did not want them to track which wall was moving when. It was just combat from that point with the goal to eliminate the NPC's. An issue arose where I kept rolling the same walls to move which became annoying and as an end result the druid/ranger was being cocooned by a spider while unconscious, the cleric was running back and forth around a corner and each time she left a wall that wall would open, and the barbarian and rogue/warlock just stayed in one hallway and waited for the monsters to come to them. Luckily they did manage to win the fight however just barely.
This was a cool encounter that I would like to revisit again but it may need some tweaks.
I once i had an encounter where a mad wizards "zoo" of beasts lost its magical power during the big fight. So periodically a random creature would run though the encounter area and take pot shots at characters who didnt or couldnt get out of the way on its mad dash to escape.
this one jumps out at me but i could go on and on lol.
One of my favorite encounters I've faced, was a diplomatic encounter to end a stalemate between two tribes of goblins. Each side was "hiding" behind leaves, branches or a long, and between them in the middle of the road......
was a single gold piece.
We were able to resolve the situation by giving a gold piece to each side and taking the piece in the middle of the road for ourselves.
As a note, we don't play goblins as evil beings who dwell underground, we play them that they can be any alignment, and even at times well meaning, but they are the epitome of stupid (they also love shinny things).
In the last campaign I was in we had to convince an aboleth to give us key information about some ancient relics. But the whole discussion took place while we were standing on top of a mirror of truth, so we couldn't lie, which made it very difficult when my character was a talkative compulsive liar.
