One of my players wants to create his own class for our next campaign, as I'm not super experienced in being a DM, I wanted to share his idea with you, and read your opinions and ideas about it (and sorry in case for any spelling issues, I'm not a native speaker).
What he wishes for is something like a gambler or card dealer who picks a random card from his deck. If you would just look at the deck it's full of empty cards, but as soon as you select your cards they turn into random spells. For level one he suggested a possible spell mix between all level 1 spells from all schools, a few level 2 spells and some level 0 spells (which are covered as normal spell cards) where I as the DM should improvise a useless event, something like "After you used your card you suddenly feel a wonderful mustache growing).
He is also thinking about some restrictions, for example just 2-3 cards a day, which you have to pick in the morning (should be a bit similar with classes which needs to prepare theire spells), an additional card in exchange for Life Points etc. but before he goes into more detail he wants to have my yes. And to be honest, that's why I'm writing this thready. I'm struggeling to say if this is balanced or not.
Does anyone have any experience with a class like this? Do you think it generally sounds balanced enough to build this class?
Fortunately, the game comes with a system for determining how many spells of each level a spellcaster of a given level can cast per day. Namely, spell slots.
I had an enemy npc with a similar MO, but made it as a sorceror sub-type. The sorceror could cast known spells by choice as normal, or could spend sorcery points to randomly cast a spell from the deck with an enhancement. Since it was an npc, however, i didn’t do a full treatment. The idea has been canvassed elsewhere online. Try google and see what others have homebrewed.

Actually, yes. I've tried messing around with a gambler concept before, and here's actually what I came up with.
Chaos Magic Sorcerer with a Deck of Many Things or Deck of Illusions. The chaos magic is based around luck manipulation and random spells going off, and there are magic items that involve casting spells by drawing the appropriate cards. If those decks don't work for you, then check out the homebrew magic item section for a couple of other magical decks (and magical dice / coins) to work with.
There are homebrew spells that let you do coin toss on the site that I recommend checking out as well.
